MIGRATE MAGAZINE

.....................................................................................................................................

It's always great to get your work into print, especially after what seems like an age. I was asked to contribute to the South African publication 'Migrate' this particular issue explored the theme of curiosity. I join a number of talented image makers in supplying existing examples of work and asking a few questions.

The publication is nicely produced boasting a UV spot finish and die-cut front cover which entices the curiosity of the viewer to reveal the artwork behind. If you are able to get a copy it is well worth a read.

ROYAL SOCIETY OF PORTRAIT PAINTERS 2011

The start of the month saw the opening of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters open at the Mall Galleries near Trafalgar Square. My portrait 'Brother' was selected as a part of the exhibition, the opening was so busy that this was the only photograph I was able to take without interruption.

The exhibition is still open, closing on May 20th 2011.

ROYAL SOCIETY OF PORTRAIT PAINTERS

I was delighted to hear that last week my portrait 'Brother' has been selected for the Royal Society of Portrait Painters Exhibition at the Mall Galleries. Thankfully the guidelines of eligibility allowed work created by pencil to be considered within this show. I am looking forward to the private view to see what made it into the exhibition, as I remember seeing some beautiful work on the designated hand-in days.

This will be the second time this portrait has been exhibited in London (it was previously exhibited at the Design Museum).

NEW BUSINESS CARDS

Amongst the post this morning I found that my new business cards from Moo had been delivered. Since my previous order I am happy to say that through vigorous networking all of my cards have found their ways into the hands of potential clients.

My new cards have been designed to highlight the fact that I use pencils to predominantly create my work. What do you think?

MUSIC TO ACCOMPANY

I thought that I would share with you an important part of my work process... Music.

Unlike many people I've never been one for playlists as I find that I'm not always in the same mood as I may have been previously leaving the time spent creating a playlist waisted.

I tend to listen to an album over and over while drawing a piece as this helps me concentrate and lose myself in what I'm doing. This especially works when I come across a new album to listen to, however my favourite aspect about applying music in this way is that this each piece of my work has somewhat of a musical reference or tag attached.

For example whenever I hear Black Stone Cherry's self titled album my piece 'Brother' will instantly come to mind as that was all I listened to when drawing it. My latest piece 'Laughter' has a different album attached to it, I seemed to have a taste for something heavier and found myself listening to The Black Dahlia Murder's 2007 album 'Nocturnal'.

As I operate in this way I may compile a list on Spotify of the album's that have accompanied my recent work after producing a few more pieces.

I have however included the links to the album's I have mentioned below.
